Tornado Shelters (Survival Shelters)
Made from structural concrete and built in place, we design and build below and above ground large tornado shelters designed to protect against the most powerful F5 tornados (300+mph wind speed). Protection includes resisting a large impact debris field associated with tornados such as cars, buildings, trees, etc. flying through the air coming into contact with the tornado shelter.
The deeper a tornado shelter is placed into the ground the better, but in high water table or other problematic site locations, there may be no option to build a tornado shelter below ground. Above ground tornado shelters are prone to being sucked up into the tornado and therefore require weight to counter-act against the wind exposure and vacuum pressure of a tornado.
Poorly designed or inadequate tornado shelter doors are prone to becoming damaged and/or forced into the shelter causing injuries and fatalities. Our tornado doors are purpose built to withstand the impacts of flying debris and the very high wind pressures of a tornado. Our tornado shelters also include an emergency escape hatch or second exit to avoid occupants becoming trapped in a shelter should the main exit door become blocked by debris.
Our tornado shelters can be an entire house or building, or a dedicated room where the shelter also provides year round living space.
Our tornado shelters can also serve as to protect against multiple threats including explosion, ballistics, hurricane, fire, armed assault, nuclear blast and fallout, biological + chemical attack, and many other threats.
Tornado shelters are typically designed to provide protection during the tornado event and not provide shelter afterwards. We can design tornado shelters to provide extended off-grid housing for survivors with comfortable sleeping quarters, bathroom, kitchen, storage, water well and emergency back-up power systems.
